First they came

First they came for people who are black

And I did not speak out

Because I was not black.

Then they came for the non-Christians

And I did not speak out

Because I was a Christian.

Then they came for asylum seekers

And I did not speak out

Because I was a citizen.

Then they came for the vote

And I did not speak out

Because I was able to vote.

Then they came for the Transsexuals

And I did not speak out

Because I was not Transsexual.

Then they came for women and reproductive rights

And I did not speak out

Because I was not a woman.

Then they came for the gays and same sex marriage

And I did not speak out

Because I was not gay.

Then they came for interracial marriage

And I did not speak out

Because I was not in an interracial marriage.

Then they came for the women’s right to vote

And I did not speak out

Because again, I was not a woman.

Then they came for me

And there was no one left

To speak out for me.

This is the current trajectory.

When will you speak out?

Or will you wait until it is too late?
