Personal Reflections of a Middle-Aged Man

Thoughts and Opinions as I Grow Older

Do Trump and Republicans Really Care About You?

Reminder: 290 and 67. The 290 represents how many U.S. House of Representatives members it takes to override a presidential veto (all Representatives are up for reelection this year). It takes 67 U.S. Senators to override a presidential veto (35 Senators are up for reelection this year with 22 of those being Republicans—the ones we have to concentrate on the most). These numbers are very important this year at the ballot box because it will take this number of votes to help right this vast ship of a country for all of us, not just the billionaire class.

The answer, which is not really a cliffhanger, is a resounding no, Trump does not care about you. He provides evidence of this almost everyday as president. Just in the last six or seven months, directly quoting, Trump has said the following during answering questions or during speeches:

“I don’t think about Americans’ financial situation. I don’t think about anybody.”

“I love the inflation.”

“The word affordability is a con job by the Democrats.”

“Let them hit San Diego. Let them hit Los Angeles.”

“And only a Hispanic could survive that fall.”

If we are trying to make ends meet as each of us stop to fill-up our tanks, book tickets to fly for visits to family members in need, pay healthcare premiums, or try to feed our families, we see first hand how little Trump and the Republicans care about us.

If we live in Los Angeles or San Diego, Trump just said they are essentially just a price to pay for his war in Iran if attacked. These 10 million people are expendable. We already know we are expendable due to Trump and the Republican use of ICE to invade, terrorize, and murder American citizens living in mainly “blue” areas of the country.

If we are not considered to be white in the United States, we can be stopped and arrested by ICE just because of our skin color. If we are speaking Spanish, or any language other than English, to friends or family walking down the street, we can also be a target for ICE arrests and deportations without so much as a trial to prove our innocence.

If we lose our jobs due to corporate downsizing, or AI takeover, or our job doesn’t pay us enough to cover our bills, Trump and the Republicans have taken away supports to help us pay our rent, buy food for our kids, or see a doctor when a kid is sick. Trump and the Republicans have cut access to Medicaid, Food Stamps, WIC, and other social safety nets.

If we are wanting to go to college, Trump and the Republicans have changed the rules to be eligible for student loans. They have decided that certain professions needing a degree don’t pay enough, such as becoming a teacher, shouldn’t be able to get a student loan.

These are just a few examples of not caring about the working class by the Trump White House and Republican Congress. These are just the ones that have gone into effect already. These are also just signs of the beginning since when the Republicans passed the so called, “Big Beautiful Bill,” they put effective dates for most of the more drastic cuts to start after the November 2026 election so we wouldn’t feel the pain until (most likely) Democrats would be the majority in Congress—the plan is for Democrats to be blamed when things go further south for a plan passed by Republicans.

Sadly, there are more cuts to programs that help everyday citizens to come if Republicans keep control of Congress. Republicans have already signaled what they plan to do.

Mike Johnson, Speaker of the House, has said Social Security and Medicare need to be adjusted. Some of those adjustments include raising the retirement age and reducing benefits for current and future retirees. Note there has been no talk by the Republicans of making the easiest change to protect Social Security for the working class. All Congress and the White House need to do is eliminate the cap on Social Security payroll taxes so that the wealthy pay their fair share into the fund. Experts are essentially in full agreement getting rid of the cap will save Social Security for generations to come, and could even include an increase in benefits for our most vulnerable members of the population, the elderly.

Bottom line is that Trump and the Republicans don’t care about you and me unless we are filthy rich or billionaires. If you, like me, have to worry about filling up at the gas station, paying an arm and a leg for insurance (especially health insurance), how to put food on the table for my family, we are nothing to Republicans other than possible rubes.

Everything Trump and Republicans have done, just thinking since January 2025, has been to the benefit of Trump and his family personally, Republicans in office at the local, state, and national levels, and the ultra-wealthy. It has been tax cuts for the ultra wealthy or sweet heart deals for corporate elites.

We suffer so they can buy another yacht, another politician, another house, another diamond, or another vanity flight into space.

If you care about yourself, your neighbor, your child, your grandchild, your working class or down-on-their-luck family member, it is time to truly look at the politicians who want to hurt you and me. To look at which politician cares about you enough to want to help us regular people, and have shown they care about working people since as far back as the 1960’s.

When truly looking at history, and the here-and now, there is one truth, an imperfect truth to be sure, but one truth in that Democrats have always tried to do right by us working people.

This is why I urge you, invite you, strongly encourage you, to vote Democrats into office from the local dog catcher to U.S. Senator, up and down the ticket. Let’s show Republicans we care about ourselves, our families, our neighbors, our towns, our states, and as importantly, the future of our country.

I’ve already voted and decided Democrats will do right by us. Please do the same. Early voting has, or will shortly, state in most states. Go vote!

P.S.—Make sure to check your voter registration weekly at vote.org (not Musk’s VoteSafe.org, which, based on reports, and my own opinion, is collecting data to be used in ways you might not like). Republicans across the spectrum are doing all they can to suppress your vote. Check your status to ensure you have time to fix it before showing up to vote, when it may be too late to correct.

P.P.S.—If you vote by mail, make sure to follow-up if you do not receive it when expected. Once complete, please do not mail it back through the post office. Drive it to the closest Drop Box where you live. If you aren’t able to drive, ask a friend, a relative, a neighbor, or if you have one, the local bus service, to take you to drop off your ballot at a Drop Box. Don’t let the Trump and Republican shenanigans stop your vote from being counted as they mess with the Post Office.
