As many of you have read, while in New York, I conducted walkabouts. I’d get up fairly early, make myself presentable, then take my camera out for a walk around Manhattan before breakfast. It was a way to get some new perspectives, not only with my camera, but in my mind as well.
The walks helped to solidify what I want and don’t want in the near future career-wise, along with some more long-range thinking.
One of the ideas to come out of the walks is to write a book. I’ve only mentioned it to about two people, and now I’m making it more public. If for no other reason than to have it out there and now I have to really do it.
My vision is for it to be somewhat of a pocket book. ASCD has done some smaller format books on a variety of topics, such as school branding. My topic is to be classroom management.
I’ve often been told how great my students do management wise (overall). I’ve also often been asked what my secret is to this success. Mind you, this doesn’t mean I have no behavioral issues as I don’t believe that is even possible when working with 22 different-minded humans. But, overall, my students do pretty well and are pretty well behaved.
On the plane ride home from NYC, I did a quick outline of my chapters. I am now trying to figure out when I can set aside time, always the crux of anything, to do the writing. All while helping to raise four children, have a happy marriage, and working full-time. Piece of cake I’m sure.
Not sure how long it will take to complete, but I am committed to seeing it through. So all my author friends, please don’t be surprised if I ask for advice or contacts as I work and as I finish.
Send me good writing vibes everyone. I’ll let you know how it goes, even it that may not be until 2030.
Frank, this is something you should absolutely do. I wish you the best in the process. Carole.
